If we can’t envision a better world, how can we create one!

Somewhere a Snow Leopard Listens
October 31st, 2011This is one of my favourite paintings. It was inspired by the words ’somewhere a wild heart won’t be broken’.
These words are from a powerful song by John Trudell on the album A.K.A Graffiti Man, Beauty in a fade. Here is a quote from Wikipedia bout this awesome man.
John Trudell (born February 15, 1946) is a Native American-Mexican author, poet, actor, musician, and former political activist. He was the spokesperson for the United Indians of All Tribes‘ takeover of Alcatraz beginning in 1969, broadcasting as Radio Free Alcatraz. During most of the 1970s, he served as the chairman of the American Indian Movement, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After his pregnant wife, three children and mother-in-law were killed in 1979 in a fire at the home of his parents-in-law on the Shoshone-Paiute Tribes Duck Valley Indian Reservation in Nevada, Trudell turned to writing, music and film as a second career. He acted in three films in the 1990s. The documentary Trudell (2005) was made about him and his life as an activist and artist.
The painting is about endangered lives and reflects not only the etheric beauty of yet another of the creatures of the Universe but also the symbolism of futures past and present lost in a moment’s gamble with another’s life. The shadow behind the mother leopard reflects the presence of the elders or maybe the spirit of the potential loss of the snow leopard in the future. The texture in the background exposes a subtle image of the Himalayas which is home to the Snow Leopard. Along her back runs a decorative fold of the story line which each viewer will sense for themselves. The waters at her feet are the elixir of life and the mercurial nature of life. We can capture it but we can’t really see into it except superficially. It is vital for survival as is all life on this planet and beyond is interdependent.
Of course the baby is the future and also the concept of bringing new understanding to the indigenous peoples who have previously seen snow leopard as a fears threat. Now with renewed understanding it is hope that they will seek to protect this creature rather than destroy her. Snow Leopard Conservancy.
As I painted her this leopard spoke to me constantly. Her eyes are deep with wisdom and as always I am profoundly humbled by having held the brush to craft her presence.
Enjoy and please email me with any questions.

Painting process and Star Visionings
October 19th, 2011Welcome! To begin let me thank you for spending time here. It would be great if you returned again-maybe often! Animals, art and life are so amazing when they connect. They are my world of conversations in paint. Last night, gazing out of the large picture window in my bedroom I was struck by the clarity of the stars dancing across the luminous purple black sky. A sight we do not often experience in an urban concrete jungle existence. Something tingles with excitement as my blinking eyes adjust to the darkness of the unfolding magic at hands length. Although I have been in this new home, on 11,000 acres of Victorian country, for nearly a month, the beauty of the night sky had not filtered through my sleep. Perhaps I had re-opened the door to my aliveness today. I felt ‘broken open’ as it were, familiar, alive with the cognizance of inner beauty that is easily felt when mindfully in nature. Why is it that we so easily forget to allow our creative source in each moment, giving it a voice inside all the seemingly practical mundanety of the every day. Why was it that this night sky touched me now? What was the catalyst? I remembered earlier feeling enriched by the words of the awesome writer / I think, philosopher, Susan Chernak McELroy, in her latest blog about endings and beginnings, compost and decay. Her words incentive for me to permit the old to dissipate allowing the new to reveal itself. I realized a letting go of the fear deep in my core, the perfectionist not being good enough to expand to unknown horizons, rather an almost imperceptible desire to re connect with past creative wanderings that I knew would work. Susan’s writing confront me with nature/inner nature in a way that I do know, however, don’t make the connection in daily life. To me it feels like connecting with the true instrument of nature that is inherent in each of use deep below the voluminous layers of our conditioning. In this realm everything flows easily without mind conflict. From here it was easy to take up paint and brush, peacefulness flowing from my iPod in the sounds of the Subway Bhaktis [ref: great music out of Byron Bay. [http://subwaybhaktis.com] as I pondered, momentarily, in a meditative state letting go of any damaging thoughts about starting this creative journey. And ‘whoosh’, there is was, colour flowing effortlessly onto the white canvas, reconnecting me with my intuitive art process, Vision Drawing, drawing out my inner visions. With the curiosity of a child I was engaged in the Here-Now; marvelling in timeless creative bliss. So it is about seeing the beauty in all past experiences that enrich the abundant ground of today. Bring excitement into the unknown and bounce fearlessly into every new creative adventure with longing to see what is hidden just below the surface of your consciousness. I do hope you can follow these ramblings! I am working on not editing or judging, seeing what is there for me. I am not a writer rather a creator of stories in paint. After 30 years of painting I know what process thrills me, yet so often I fall into unconscious methods. This is why I share Vision Drawing as a concept with you. Putting the experience down on paper helps me articulate in a way that hopefully others can receive. Here is the beginning of the painting that inspired my vision of the night sky. You can see how the warm colours intermingle. I created texture by ‘breaking the surface’ of the original colours with rags, plastic, brush and fingers. The resultant paint surface, broken into a kaleidoscope of form and shape gives birth to imagery and symbols as if from a vision.
So for now it is back to the studio. I will continue to journal about Vision Drawing in the hope that you will take something of value away for your own use. Meantime keep your days and ways creative…….blaze
My Painting Process in Touching The Heart of Another
September 14th, 2011Do you ever think about painting? What it means to you? Is there disassociation or fear or do you embrace the experience with curiosity and presence?
For me it is a means to reach out through the senses, and intensely experience the reality of another being. In this way I rediscover, again and again, the sheer wonder and mystery of being alive, being a part of the rich tapestry of the river of life.
I work intuitively, the painting process becoming a conversation between the canvas and myself as the story evolves. These stories often reflect what is happening in my world and the world at large. They are one part personal journeys, the other stories from a collective unconscious. For this reason they can touch a spark in others unlocking the door to their own stories.
Visually, it is the equivalent to that state of fertile stillness reached through deep meditation. My art attempts to capture that moment of connection with another being as felt thru the senses rather than reasoning. This is not a conscious or premeditated choice.
Beyond all theory and conceptualizing, painting for me is a mysterious, non-verbal dialogue between perception, feeling and paint. Deeply rooted in realities that I am still exploring. At its best a kind of magic can take over and the brushes, paint and canvas seem to be speaking themselves, giving form to another life. When this happens it is the purest peace I know.
So why paint animals. Not because I choose to but simply because I cannot ‘not’. I paint what I must, not what I choose.
Creatures are our allies, a rich source of wisdom and inspiration as their presence moves us to remembering a deeper part of ourselves. Perhaps they even sacrifice themselves that the human heart may open in the face of their suffering.
Reconnecting with animals and nature is surely a way thru this ‘nadir’ of the human soul.
My hope is that thru my art others ‘feel’ rather than just label what is true here…when we are unable to ‘see’ our bond with all things, our inner soul withers away and we end up dying in our lives.
Personally, I feel the shame of humanity’s disrespect for nature. For centuries art has been a means to connect with that spirit. It is possible that art now has a mission; to help repaired the harm, restored the balance and send voices of compassion and healing out into the universe.
Artists do influence the River of Life. I believe have an obligation in this time to delve deep and produce works of Consciousness that give birth to the ‘humanity’ that is ripe in the human soul. What we focus on we create. What we put into our work, others take away.
Perhaps opening our hearts and reconnecting to the Truth within us will help lift the veil of unconsciousness that is draped around so many on this Earth.

Conversation Pieces for Animals Asia
August 2nd, 2011
“THANK YOU EVERYONE! we did it!”
Just a quick follow up on the first event for “Conversation Pieces”, an art evening for Animals Asia hosted by Samantha Baillieu and myself in February 2011. Many of you attended at the Sophie Gannon Gallery in Richmond. Again thank you for supporting this project. We were so thrilled that so many chose to join us to support the amazing work of Jill Robinson and Animals Asia.
In The Beginning -
First off here is the beautiful invitation which was created by the Hong Kong office of Animals Asia. Thanks Carol.
This photograph taken on the night truly embodies the event title , ‘Conversation Pieces’.
The event was a great success raising awareness for the horrific culture of bear bile farms in Asia. There were many very really moments of ‘conversation between the paintings and the audience as the pic above shows. Generous donations raised funds [more than $25,000] to build an Education Centre at the Tam Dao Moon Bear Rescue Centre in Vietnam….. And they have nearly done it!

Here is a pic. to see how things are progressing. It is now about 85% complete. Educational messages will be attached to the wooden frames on the walls. Next step is the education trail and herb garden, which shows the alternatives to bear bile.
You will be pleased to know that 100% of the donations went direct to the Vietnam Rescue Centre and I am inspired to see this project actualized. Hope you are too. [photo above]
Your support is so appreciated. THANKYOU! The Bears thank you too!
The excited staff thank you whilst making enrichment toys. Leanne Clarke [on the left] was the wonderful vet for the rescue centre.

So what’s next. I am looking for a very special beautiful space in Melbourne to hang a small exhibition of paintings for a show supporting World Wildlife Week October 4 – 10 2012. If you have any information please email me ; blaze@blazewarrender.com
Thanks for joining me. Keep creative…blaze

QUOTE: “Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission – to be of service to them whenever they require it… If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.” ~ St Francis of Assisi
One of the Sun Bears at the Vietnam Rescue Centre
This is the cage that one even two bears are kept in on private farms where they are milked for bile.
No peace!
The bears are housed in dens that have huge outdoor forest areas for play and recreation. Remember that they cannot be released into the wild because of their terrible, often life-long experiences which have left them physically, emotionally and psychologically scared. A great deal of effort is put into enrichment programs, health and medical attention. The bears are extraordinarily forgiving given the hideous treatment they have had at human hands.
Hello & Welcome
July 5th, 2011Welcome to my Journal. I am excited to be back on the Ethernet sharing my writings that I hope will be inspiring and interesting for you. Such a valuable practice for me as I allow myself to ‘free-write’ about things that really impact on me amid my Vision Drawing experiences and Conversation Pieces projects.
For those who do not know me, this journal is where I can ‘say it’ as it is for me. Over time I have found that by sharing my awareness of things spiritual, my passion for wildlife and nature, also my experiences in transformative art all seem to become more vivid and fecund. Probably because I want to make them interesting for you so I create a richer reality for myself. Funny how that works!
Even though we live in different parts of the world, with different environments around us, we share the same sky; the same oceans, the same land and all are creature inhabitants. Perhaps some of what I say will also be true for you.
My journey into painting has been as if in a dream – I never set out to paint, I was swept up by my first endeavours into a realm that changed my world forever. What an adventure it has been full of ups and downs. It will be fun to share Vision Drawing with you, and reflect further on the power of animals to change our hearts and our consciousness and so our world. ‘Conversation Pieces’ is my way of exploring this.
My training as a transpersonal art therapist has been a platform to understand the awakening that happens when we move with courage to explore our own inner world thru creativity.
The canvas has become a sacred place for me. A place where I choose to focus on creating beauty. A place of meditation and thoughts of kindness for myself and all life. I am more convinced than ever that what energies I put into the canvas others will take away. Animals and nature are a conduit to open human hearts and change consciousness. Art is a vehicle to explore this from the inner world to the outer and beyond.
So this place of re-connecting, thru art and animals is what I call ‘Vision Drawing’.
So let me encourage you to dive feet first into your own creative self-expression with curiosity and wonder using animals and nature as a catalyst to ‘remembering’ your ‘true nature’.
If you are interested in my journals please subscribe … it’s free and a way of me communicating with others about my world.
A quote from one of my hero’s~ Chief Seattle “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect .”
For now ‘keep creative’ and enjoy this moment, Blaze
